THE DEVILâS EPISTLE TO THE GREAT WHORE OF BELGRADE
OH, MADAM, WHO represents me in the damnable town at the confluence of the Rivers Sava and Ister,
I command you to summon all the devils and evil spirits, demons and household sprites, the knights of the secret doors of the East, the knights of the great construction, the knights of the Pharaonic pyramids, witches, warlocks and wizards, gamblers, whores and debauchers and all those who bow down to me and kiss my ass on the Sabbath.
Say to them:
Thus speaks the One whose throne is in the north:
God has turned his back on this land. But that does not mean that our time has come. Behold, a new class of the deceitful is on the move, new men are coming who have broken their contract with God and with me. They will not even hear of me, the father of all schismatics, the protector of rebels and plotters.
They believe that they came into being because apes became people through long-suffering labor. They fantasize that millions of years went by so that they could appear. What kind of times are these? Sodom and Gomorrah were razed to the ground for far less evil deeds. Does a higher devil exist, of which I know not, who is plotting behind my back? Or is that just one more of the evil deeds God is doing to me?
Because as soon as they stop believing in him, they also stop believing in me. They think that we are all superstition! They lie even more than we do, and we are powerless.
How many souls have been sold in the last three years? Eighteen. Itâs shameful! How many followers have left our lodges during that same time? Four hundred twenty-nine. Even worse. Those simpletons, those earthworms, are convinced that apes strove to perfect themselves over thousands of generations, yeah right, that these monsters would appearâthey are usurping my following. O tempora, o mores!
You reported to me that they are offering more. What are they offering, I asked you, and you held: that they can do whatever they want. Donât I offer the same? Yes, earthly goods, power, fame, the opportunity to commit evil deeds. But, you maintain, they donât want to give anything in return. They have pulled out of the world order, killed emperors, kings, and princesses. They betray each other, kill each other, and do all sorts of villainy.
Announce the urbi et orbi. To all my servants:
Go wherever your eyes lead you. Attack the few remaining hermits. Do what you will. Their blood is on their heads. You have nothing else to seek here. The few elect will be saved whether we like it or not; the rest are far too damned even for my taste. They break the rules of fair play that God established and which we all have to respect, as it is in heaven, so it is for us down here.
But, lo, the day is coming when their rage will reach its end and when they will long for the comfort of my hell.
